I’m a hardworking person just like everyone else in this great state we call home. My husband and I average $50,000 a year. We are raising 2 boys on that income, which is tough. When I was 19, my first husband and I were able to purchase a $78,000 home for $650 a month with both of us making around $10 an hour. Today, my husband and I can’t do that. There is too much wealth inequality. The income gap is huge. In the last 30 years, since 1989, the top 1% has gained $21T in wealth. Meanwhile, the bottom 50%, myself, has lost $900B in wealth. But with all the debt that the bottom 50% holds, we actually have a net wealth of less than $0! So that gap between the top 1% and the bottom 50% is $30 trillion. This is unacceptable.
I cannot just sit aside and hope that it will someday change because that day seems never to be coming. It is time to act. There is so much important stuff to be done. I wonder what the planet will look like and what life will be like in 50 years from now. So many politicians in an office right now won’t be alive in 50 years and I wonder if they actually care about those of us who will be? It’s time to make a difference.
